I still have some stocks of old dry wall backgrounds I’d like to share. It’s a separate set from the one I previously featured in “Free Textures: 45 Grunge Concrete Plastered Walls” but similarly grungy. I was using some of these as background in some of my current projects when I chanced upon creating some into Photoshop brushes. And it came out good as Photoshop brushes. So I decided to share today ten old and grungy wall textured Photoshop brushes. All brushes are in high resolution 300 dpi measuring 1024 x 1024 pixels each.

We know that Photoshop has a smudge tool that you can conveniently use anytime. But most often it’s hard to create the kind of smudge paint effect we really want with the smudge tool. Here are some radiantly splendid Photoshop brushes of light beams or ray of lights that you can freely download here in Graphic Design Free Resources. All five light beam brushes are so natural with smooth realistic streak of lights shining from above (you can also change light direction in the “Brush Preset” panel by changing the brush angle). These are high-resolution brushes measuring around 1600 to 2000 pixels.

Today I’m featuring a set of free Photoshop brushes of web icons. This package comes in three .asl files containing 517 small web icons and symbols. They are well-crafted, simple and flat web icons that can easily fit in any web layout.

Photoshop brush icons are very handy if you use Photoshop to design your web layout. Although there are many ways you can start designing your website. Some may choose to start hand drawing their design concept and some like to start hard-coding right away. For me and most web designers I know, like to start using Photoshop in designing their website. it’s very convenient and more visual to start doodling your imaginary website using graphic design softwares like Photoshop. Here’s a rundown of the simple process using Photoshop in web design.

1. Using Photoshop, create an image of the general layout you’d like to use for your site.

2. Once you’re design or image is final, you’ll need to “slice” it up for use in your Website template. In this process, it helps to have a good working knowledge of HTML. You must know how tables work, so you can slice your image in tables, and work your way up adjusting and fixing the same HTML tables using Dreamweaver or similar web development application softwares.

3. Then it’s time to publish your web design to create an HTML document and sliced images. This will become the template you’ll use to create all the pages of your Website.

I was about to post just the background images but I needed to use some light brushes as well to jazz up my sample image. So I ended up with this great package. Free background images with bonus Photoshop brushes of dynamic and abstract lights.

Perhaps some of you Photoshop experts already know how to create dazzling abstract light effects in Photoshop. But for newbie Photoshop users and others who want to create wicked designs with some dynamic lighting effects fast, these background images and Photoshop brushes will come real handy for them. We have today a huge collection of 1,164 flat ornamental Photoshop brushes. These are flat brushes which you can modify or customize. Now how do you modify a Photoshop brush shape? Here’s a simple tutorial.

Modifying a Photoshop Brush Shape

Modifying brush shapes is easy, most of the interface are self-explanatory. Select Window > Brushes or press F5 to display the brush palette. On the brush palette, click the item named Brush Tips Shape to display the options shown below. The top-right portion of the palette displays thumbnails of the predefiend brushes. You may select a brush you want tweak and modify.

Photoshop Brush Tips Shape Options

Diameter: This option says exactly what it is, it determines the diameter or the width of the brush (Brush Size). You can enter diameter values from 1 to 2,500 pixels in text box or use slider to set brush size.

Flip X and Flip Y: Select the Flip X check box to flip an asymmetrical brush shape into a mirror image of itself horizontally, and the Flip Y check box to flip the brush shape vertically.

Angle: This option rotates the brush shape on its axes. Unless the brush is complete round shape, though, you won’t see a difference. You may enter how many degrees you want your angle or you can just click anywhere in the white box to rotate the arrow head.

Roundness: A roundness value of 100 percent means your brush shape is a circle. Entering a roundness value of less than 100 percent means you have an elliptical brush shape. The value modifies the height of the brush as a percentage of the Diameter value. You can also drag the handles on either side of the black circle to make the brush shape elliptical.

Hardness: Hardness option controls how hard or soft your brush will be. The hardest setting is at 100 percent and the softest setting at 0 percent. Again, you can enter numerical values or simply drag the slider bar to control this setting.

Spacing: The Spacing option controls how each impression are spaced apart of how frequently they are emitted, measured as a percentage of the brush shape. For example, if the Diameter of your brush is 100 pixels and your Spacing is 25 percent, then every 25 pixels you drag with the Brush tool, Photoshop will draw a 100 pixel spot. A Spacing of 1 percent provides maximum coverage but also slows down the application of the brush tool. But if you deselect the Spacing check box, the effect will be dependent on the speed at which you drag your brush.

Now how do you use Photoshop brushes?

There are two ways to use brushes. The brush you want to use and the effect you are trying to achieve will determine the method you use.

You can paint with the brush and this is the method most suitable for basic round brushes and often the best choice for montage layouts. In this method you select the Paint Brush in your Tool Box, choose your brush and paint using your mouse as though you were literally painting on a canvass.

You can also use your brush like a rubber stamp. This method is most suitable for intricate brushes such as these brushes we have today. The brush then leaves a single impression on your layout and you can increase or decrease the opacity of this impression or change the color as desired. The more you stamp with a brush and the variety of brushes used will eventually lead to a better artwork.

Some more tips:

• Create a new layer before adding new brush strokes, so that if you make a mistake then it can easily be fixed.
• Be creative. Brushes are a valuable tool with limitless possibilities.
